Interview with Amythyst Kiah

A smiling Black woman seen from the chest up. She is wearing a black jacket with a black-and-white polka dotted shirt showing through at the collar, cuffs, and front. She is looking up off to her right. There's a big orange sun and sky behind her and what looks like wheat stalks in the background.

Kiah is a Grammy-nominee (for her song “Black Myself") and was part of the group Our Native Daughters, featuring Rhiannon Giddens, Leyla McCalla, and Allison Russell. The project featured the four musicians using the banjo, an instrument with origins in Africa, to make music exploring historical issues affecting Black women. Kiah's most recent solo album, Still + Bright, features guest spots from S.G. Goodman, Billy Strings, and more. We talked with Kiah about how growing up in suburban Tennessee shaped her eclectic musical tastes and how she continues to look for ways to expand as a musician when she joined us for an interview that aired on January 6, 2026.
