Tips for Hardy Gardeners: An Insurance Plan for the Winter

Don't let the warm start to November steer your focus away from prepping your garden for the winter months. The cold will be here soon enough, and there are measures to be taken to make sure our plants stay healthy through freezing temps.

One of the ways to help plants is to purchase inexpensive tree wrap and conceal the trunks of any young trees. Many animals will make a meal of young trees if not for a simple layer that can easily be taped into place. A more thorough option is fencing.

Covering some of your garden ground with straw (not hay) and/or bags of leaves (not loose leaves) will aid in your bulbs that may already be in the ground. The space provided by straw and bags of leaves will allow warmth to be retained and, thus, do more for your future garden.

Tips for Hardy Gardeners can be heard every other Tuesday morning on Northland Morning.
