Autumn might be in the air, but for some gardeners, spring is on the mind.
With harvesting coming to a close, the time is right for planting flower bulbs. For gardeners planning on a colorful spring garden, planting flowers can begin now and go until the ground freezes.
When planting, keep in mind that tulip bulbs should be planted at a depth of at least 5 inches. If you're planting garlic, those bulbs can be much more shallow - about an inch or two deep. Additional dirt and straw over the top will help the bulbs through the winter months.
Once they're in the ground, be sure you also have the appropriate protection from hungry critters. Fencing or other methods should be applied to make sure that interested animals don't have easy access.
