On Wednesday, August 26th, there will be an opportunity to take a Green Infrastructure Tour at 5pm on Barker's Island. "Designs of green infrastructure typically mimic natural systems that are managing stormwater where it falls," says Megan Högfeldt, Water Resources Specialist for the City of Superior. "It could be so many different things."
From rain gardens to bio infiltration basins to permeable pavers, the function of green infrastructure is to work similarly to nature. One location in the Twin Ports that demonstrates this is Barker's Island. "Barker's Island is a really special place for a number of reasons," says Lisa DeGuire, Water Resource Program Coordinator. "It's a hotspot of recreation for us in the City of Superior but it's also lesser known a hotspot for green infrastructure."
Next Wednesday, from 5-7pm, people are invited to meet at the Lake Superior Estuarine on Barker's Island for a walking tour that will highlight the green infrastructure of the area. "Being on Barker's, you're surrounded by all of these thoughtful water quality projects that you may be walking by without even knowing it," says DeGuire.
If you are interested in attending, registration can be found online. For more information about the tour, you can visit the City of Superior Environmental Services Division Facebook Page.
You can hear Green Visions at 8:20am every Wednesday on Northland Morning.
