For 65 years, Carlton Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) has been helping the community to understand the landscape in the area and how to best manage it.

The beginnings of the SWCD go back to the dust bowl. "The way we were managing our resources was not really sustainable," says Marcie Peeters, Community Conservationist with Carlton SWCD. After the windy and dry times in the 1930s, government leaders began considering efforts to caring for the land. From there, Conservation Districts began showing up across the nation. "The [local] citizens decided that we want to know how to better manage our land, we want to have a group to help us do that."

On Tuesday, August 18th, the Carlton SWCD will celebrate the past 65 years with a gathering at Chub Lake Park Pavilion in Carlton from 10am-2pm. The event will include food, photos, workshops, information, and the unveiling of their new logo. Chub Lake was chosen specifically, as it is home to a raingarden, pollinator garden, and is the site other projects from SWCD. "It'll be a really good visual for people to see what the work that we're doing is," says Peeters. "[To] understand the process, the growth, and hopefully see the vision of how they can be a part of that too."

More information about the 65th Anniversary event can be found on the Soil & Water Conservation District website. To register for the provided lunch, find the Carlton SWCD form online.

You can hear Green Visions at 8:20am every Wednesday on Northland Morning.
