With temperatures sometimes creeping up into the 70s, it can be said that spring is actually here. And there are plenty of signs of the season in the outdoors here in the Northland.
The raptor activity continues to evolve. With migration well underway, the bald eagles have given way to red-tailed hawks and the growing-in-number turkey vultures, sharp-shinned hawks and broadwing hawks. Lots of songbirds are also making their presence known in the area. With 26 different species of Warblers alone, looking at the feeders can become a game of I Spy.
Perhaps the most noteworthy sighting right now is the pelicans that show up at Chamber's Grove this time of year. These big birds make a temporary stopover on the St. Louis River to briefly increase the diverse sights of spring.
You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
