Backyard Almanac: A Cold End to January

January has been a tale to two halves. The first two weeks saw an average of 18 degrees above zero. The last two weeks averaged negative five in the Northland. As a result, January will end up colder than average.

Through the cold, there are still plenty of critters about. Lots of birds are still visiting the feeder, many mammals are traipsing about the landscape looking for food... but don't expect to see a groundhog. Even though the rodent is supposed to foretell the coming of the spring this weekend, we'll not see its likeness around the north woods.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.

Luke Moravec is the host for Northland Morning on The North 103.3. He’s also a local actor, musician and writer. He loves puzzles, riddles and fun mysteries.
