Recently, there's been an increase in public forest land in St. Louis County as a result of efforts by The Conservation Fund. "We are always looking at opportunities to take forests that are out in different states, especially here in Minnesota, and work to get those into public hands," says Kim Berns Melhus, the Minnesota Director of The Conservation Fund.
On August 4th this year, forest land in the county was purchased, thus keeping these spaces in public hands. "These lands were strategically selected by St. Louis County as lands that would add ecologically and - from a timber management standpoint - to the county land base," says Berns Melhus. "These are really important lands for, not only keeping jobs going in Northern Minnesota, but also ecologically in terms of the connectivity of the current forest that the county manages."
