Backyard Almanac: The Arrival of Sensational September

Flip the calendar. Awesome August is over and Sensational September has begin.

So far this month, the migration numbers have started to soar. Thousands of raptors are continuing to be counted at Hawk Ridge. However, those numbers pale in comparisons to the September 1st count of Green Darner Dragonflies, which numbered around 57,000.

Also active are snapping turtles. With a period of 80-100 days between when eggs are laid and when they hatch, we're approaching the time when babies will start emerging from roadside nests and making their way to water.

And, yes, fall color is starting to peek through the green. The yellow and reds are already prevalent and will, of course, become more abundant as the month rolls along.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
