Backyard Almanac: July in Flight

After a June that was on par with temps, July looks to take flight - possibly with temperatures, and definitely with critters.

The baby birds of spring have grown into the fledglings of summer and will be learning to fly this month. Also flitting about are dragonflies, bees, and lots of butterflies. Monarch and Tiger Swallowtails can both be seen in the earlier part of the month along with Fritillaries and skippers. And when the lights go out, keep your eyes open for bats and fireflies.

And if this summer gets warm enough, we might experience something of a reverse-hibernation called estivation. Estivation happens when the summer gets too warm and some animals retreat underground. Snakes are one of the most likely creatures to partake.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
