In the final days of June, dragonflies, butterflies and mosquitos are out in numbers. But they best beware sure they know where they're landing.
The pitcher plant - a carnivorous plant found near bogs and ponds in the Northland - lies in wait for unsuspecting insects. With a gaping maw, the plant invites insects inside where they're met with downward facing fibers that make escape nearly impossible. Rainwater collects at the bottom bringing death by drowning for any doomed insect lacking the wiles to avoid the pitcher plant.
You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
