Second only to Mother's Day, Valentine's Day is the biggest day for flower purchases, and master gardener Tom Kasper has some tips for keeping those flowers looking good, as well as some alternative gift suggestions for that special someone.
"Lots of people getting out and getting roses and kind of those traditional things," said Kasper. "Maybe consider... house plants. Things like orchids or anthurium, or different things like that that still have beautiful flowers, but they last longer."
Even if you do go with roses, Kasper says there are ways to improve their life. First, remove the flowers from their vase and cut the ends on them. This will increase the water flow up the steam and improve their life by many days. Second, you can change their water every couple of day. Flowers can last much longer if you complete this process.
And if Valentine's Day isn't heavily circled on your calendar, the newly minted "Germination Day" is just around the corner. During the last weeks of February, many gardeners will be prepping seeds indoors in anticipation of spring.
