"We just want to make sure we have a place, not only today... but also fifty years down the line," says Brian Ruggle, board member for Minnesota Point 50, a non-profit committed to protecting Park Point in Duluth ecologically, culturally and sociologically.
This Saturday, May 2nd from 10am-2pm, the organization is hosting Chalk It Up!, an event to celebrate the upcoming summer season and to highly safety during these months of higher traffic and use. "There have been significant accidents in the past," says Ruggle. "[Residents] see people speeding and passing... not only is that scary, it's also dangerous."
Attendees will be encouraged to add their own chalk design or images to the recreation lane near Lafayette Square to bring awareness to the pedestrians that use the space. "People come from all over to visit Park Point," says Ruggle. "This is a special place."
