Nan Montgomery has been telling stories for decades. From stages in Minneapolis to her children's slumber parties, she's enjoyed sharing her words with an audience. "I love telling stories," says Montgomery. "I've been doing it all my life."
Every fourth Friday at Dovetail Café in Duluth, you can find Nan involved with Storyfolk, a monthly storytelling event that welcomes audiences and storytellers to listen and share. Presenters get ten minutes to share their story, which could be wild and fictional or deep and personal. Unlike an open mic event, storytellers are not allowed to read their story. "You don't get to have a sheet of paper," says Montgomery. "If you know a story very well, you don't need the notes."
For newcomers, Montgomery cites the empowerment that comes with getting on stage in front of an audience. "When people tell a story," says Montgomery. "There are members in the audience... that can relate to that... people get up who've never told a story before, and they've been fabulous stories."
The next Storyfolk event is this Friday, March 27th from 5:30-7:30pm at Dovetail Café.
You can hear Community Connection every Tuesday and Thursday at 8am on Northland Morning.
