"It's funny... programming for this season," says Jody Kujawa, Theater Manager at Zinema in downtown Duluth. "It's not necessarily my jam." If you see Kujawa, he's usually donning a t-shirt highlighting an iconic horror film, but the season dictates screenings for the season.
Movie screenings for the holidays at the Zeitgeist Zinema include The Muppets Christmas Carol, It's a Wonderful Life, and Scrooged starring Bill Murray. Two Christmas-adjacent films are also slated for later in the month. You can catch screenings of Gremlins on the 18th, 20th, and 21st, and then the Bruce Willis action classic Die Hard on December 23rd.
But is Die Hard a Christmas movie? It's a long-debated question, for which Kujawa has an answer. "It has those Christmas themes, like reuniting a family, coming together for the holidays under duress," says Kujawa. "Probably just slightly more stressful than meeting family."
And bridging Christmas with his love of horror is never out of the question. In the past, Kujawa has aired Black Christmas, and in the future, he's considering the 2010 Finnish film Rare Exports.
