April Fool's Day is here and Paul Lundgren has stories of local pranks mixed with high school rivalries.
Some of the most famous pranks in Duluth occurred as a result of the rivalry between Central and Denfeld. During the 1974-1975 school year, Denfeld students managed to place a Volkswagen with "Hunters" spray painted on the side on top of Central's roof. While the methodology is unclear, Lundgren says their teachers would have been quietly proud.
"No one has exactly explained it to me I guess, but what I've been told a few times over the years is it was basically a combination of skills they learned in shop class and physics class."
Five years later, in 1979, Central students egged the Denfeld band as they came out at the beginning of a football game. However, the tides quickly turned for Central, as Denfeld students left the game, went to the store, and hit the Central band with eggs at halftime. In the end, the laundry bill was very expensive for both schools.
