"There's not a lot of books out there for kids about grieving and death," says Betsy Albert-Peacock, co-author of Little Dandelion, a children's book from Albert-Peacock's publishing company, Black Bears and Blueberries Publishing.
The book, which has been nominated for a Northeastern Minnesota Book Award, tells a wistful Ojibwe story from the point of view of a dandelion learning about the passage of life with his parents and grandmother.
Albert-Peacock started her publishing company to give voice to native books by native writers and illustrators. What began as a side-job transformed into a company that has published 51 books, many of the publications featuring first-time writers.
Little Dandelion was written by Rita Bergstein and Betsy Albert-Peacock, and illustrated by Anna Granholm, a graduate from Fond du Lac Tribal College. The book is available at many bookstores and also online. Visit Black Bears and Blueberries Publishing to learn more.
