For neurodivergent Evvie, there are many things that help in surviving high school, and it's an eight-legged friend that just might top the list.
Rules for Camouflage by Kirstin Cronn-Mills follows Evvie as she does her best to go unnoticed by problematic teachers and fellow students alike. Her only safe haven at her small-town school is "the Lair", a safe space for neurodivergent students in need of a break from what might otherwise be an overwhelming day.
Through her volunteer experience at the Minnesota Zoo, Evvie also finds comfort in the strong bond formed with Aretha, an octopus and Evvie's guide to the world of camouflage. Within a system built for the neurotypical brain, Evvie finds herself on the brink of her high school career while navigating friendships, final school projects, and romance.
Rules for Camouflage can be purchased at various bookstores as well as online. "My favorite one is BookShop," says Cronn-Mills. "That's where money gets given back to local bookstores."
