Community Connection: Political Satire "POTUS" Opening Tonight at Zeitgeist

Seven women trying to keep the president afloat. That's the brief description of POTUS, the political satire opening tonight at the Zeitgeist Theater.

For Zeitgeist Producing Artistic Director and POTUS cast member, Mary Fox, a show of this nature seemed like a natural fit this season. "It's election year. Let's just pick a show that's going to be powerful in its own way, but we can laugh really hard at the ridiculousness of it all." The script doesn't hold back on parodying past presidential scandals, and skewers at will - regardless of political party.

With a female director, cast, and playwright, the topic of gender equality lingers throughout. "We ask the question often in this play 'Why isn't she president?'" says director Kate Horvath regarding the existing inequality in the political world and beyond. The characters range from high-level White House staff to personal relations of the president. "We have these iconic representations of titles, but we have women holding the titles," says Horvath. "Not only are they holding the titles, but they are holding up the country. And it's not going well."

POTUS opens on May 30th and runs through June 8th at the Zeitgeist Theater in Duluth. For more information and tickets, visit the Zeitgeist Theater website.
