Author Timothy Cochrane cites in the introduction of his new book Making the Carry that he wished to do research on Tchi-Ki-Wis and John Linklater so as to separate the legend from reality. In the end, the historical data painted a picture of a mythological tall tale anyway.
The Linklaters, who lived in and around the far reaches of Northern Minnesota from the late 1800 into the 1930s, were a family that lived among the wilderness, used the land for just about everything they needed, and took considerable actions to conserve the natural world around them.
Making the Carry is available for purchase online as well as locally at Zenith Bookstore in Duluth and Drury Lane in Grand Marais.
