"The term used at that time was “Sámi-æna” which is most probably a translation or rather adaption of the Norse term for the same area. To me that was less than ideal. I discussed this with Aage Solbakk, who had helped me when we made the Sámi Calendar. I asked if there is no other term that could be used, and then he checked Konrad Nielsen's famous dictionary and suggested the term Sábmi with its multiple meaning: 1. The Sámi homeland; 2.
