The High 48s: (l-r) David Robinson, Rich Casey, Eric Christopher, Clint Birtzer, and Anthony Ihrig

This Minneapolis band was formed in 2006 and keeps up a busy performance and teaching schedule. While their music comes out of the bluegrass tradition, they give it their own twist, and are as likely to cover a Clash tune as they are to cover Bill Monroe, as well as writing their own originals. We talked with banjo player and vocalist Anthony Ihrig, fiddler and vocalist Eric Christopher, bassist Rich Casey, guitarist and vocalist Clint Birtzer, and mandolin player and vocalist David Robinson about their most recent album, Crocodile Man. In addition to originals written by Ihrig and Christopher, the release features covers that were brought to the table by the various band members, including the title track, originally written by Dave Carter and performed by him with Tracy Grammer. We also found out about how each band member got their start playing music, and they performed two tunes from the new album as well as a brand-new original when they joined us in the studio on March 7, 2024.
