Journey to Wellness in Indian Country: A New Shelter for Native Women and Children in Need

AICHO / Dabinoo 'Igan Domestic Violence Shelter

[This episode of Journey to Wellness in Indian Country was originally aired on December 3, 2018, and was re-aired on December 31, 2018.]

We speak with Shannon Larson, the Director of the Dabinoo 'Igan Domestic Violence Shelter (run by AICHO, the American Indian Community Housing Organization) about their move to a new, larger facility.

The need for the Dabinoo 'Igan Domestic Violence Shelter to expand is very important to safeguard women and children in need in our midst.  According to US government statistics, Native American and Alaska Native women are 2.5 times more likely to be raped or sexually assaulted than other women in the USA.  In addition, more than 80% of American Indian and Alaska Native women have experienced violence, and more than 1 in 2 have experienced sexual violence.

On December 18th, Mending the Sacred Hoop and Men As Peacemakers are holding the Dabinoo 'Igan Holiday Drive, collecting donated items for the shelter such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, bar soap, facial wash, moisturizer, lotion, lip balm, toothbrush, floss, toothpaste, hairbrush, comb, hair accessories, hair products, deodorant, razors, nail clippers, hand sanitizer, feminine hygiene products, baby hygiene products.
