Green Visions: "Unless Something Goes Terribly Wrong" Wastewater Documentary Screening

On Thursday, October 22nd at the Superior Public Library, folks will have the opportunity to see behind the scenes of wastewater work with a screening of the documentary Unless Something Goes Terribly Wrong.

The film focuses on a wastewater treatment plant in Maine that's dealing with aging infrastructure, forever chemicals, an uninterested public, and more while wrestling with the messiness of the job. "I can relate to it," says Megan Högfeldt, Water Resources Specialist with the City of Superior. "I think a lot of my coworkers could relate to it too, because there are just a lot of poop jokes at our facilities and there are some things that can go wrong."

Not all wastewater treatment facilities are created equally, nor are they at the same stages of life. "Nothing's going to explode at our facility," says Högfledt of the facility in Superior. "We're in good shape." The facility in the film is underfunded, dealing with aging equipment, and undergoing heavy turnover in the field.

Although the documentary is humorous, one of the goals of screening this film locally is to enlighten the public about what goes on behind the scenes with wastewater. "It'll hopefully give the community a good idea of what's going on here," says Högfeldt. "We'll have an educational panel at the end with local experts."

Unless Something Goes Terribly Wrong contains some adult language that might not be suitable for children. The free screening begins at 5pm on October 22nd at the Superior Public Library.

You can hear Green Visions at 8:20am every Wednesday on Northland Morning.
