Tips for Hardy Gardeners: Ready, Set... Wait!

Spring has sprung, or so our calendars tell us. Sunshine and temperatures are within the normal range for this time of year. Gardeners have been cooped up over the winter months, and they’re getting restless. Although it’s still a bit early, there are always preparatory things you can do.

It’s another great week for pruning fruit trees. Ideally, you want to prune before the buds break in late April. You can also start on some seedlings. It’s still too early for most vegetables, but peppers could be started after April 1st. You can start tomatoes inside, but they shouldn’t be moved to the garden until June 1st.

Snow mold is a sort of white webbing that you’ll see on your lawn as the snow recedes. It's not harmful to people, but it can cause some spotty regrowth. Snow mold is easily dealt with; gentle raking will do the trick.

The Garden Extravaganza took place this past Saturday, sponsored by the St. Louis County Master Gardeners. Roughly 200 people were present, and Tom Kasper spoke about the principles of landscape design and how to plant perennials. Other topics included healthy turf grass and garden nutrition. Believe it or not, purple vegetables contain a higher level of antioxidants! The Garden Extravaganza takes place every year in the spring.
