The Harbor City International School's Action Club Team were invited to Target Field on May 14th. The team was told they would be receiving an award. "We didn't know what award we would get," says coach Brian Scott. "In a pre-game ceremony we were then awarded the Water Stewardship award... to be on the field was really awesome too."
The Action Club Team is a student club aiming for sustainable initiatives in the community. "A lot of the projects we took on this year were centered around water and water resources," says Scott. "We hope that some of the things we did will continue on." The team does annual beach sweeps and tracks information to help with environmental policy. Additionally, the team has collaborated with elementary school students for downtown clean-ups and connected with city officials to learn more about storm water pollution.
Youth Eco Solutions (YES!) is the larger organization focused on empowering youths to create solutions for ecological challenges. In the future, the Action Club Team at Harbor City International School has some plans and a lot of potential. "Later this summer we're going to get to go to the State Fair and be a part of the eco experience there and talk about some of the work that we did," says Scott. "That'll be a really fun opportunity for some of the students that want to teach other people about what's going on in Duluth."
