After a little break (of 25 years or so) Bob King is celebrating his retirement with a return to The North 103.3's airwaves! After almost 40 years with the Duluth News Tribune, Bob is now retired. But scratch a print guy and you'll find a radio guy; King and then-UMD Planetarium Director Glen Langhorst hosted Startalk on KUMD for several years in the early '90s.Listen for Astro Bob every other Tuesday at 8am on Northland Morning.

Astro Bob's Backyard Astronomy: "My kingdom for a colander!" - UPDATE!

While disgruntled local weather watchers clambered out of bed early Thursday morning, only to be greeted by clouds instead of a (safe) peek at the annual eclipse, Bob King was almost 40,000 feet up in the air, far above the clouds and just about everything else, on his first eclipse flight.

He was invited on the 2021 Annual Eclipse Flight by Sky & Telescope magazine.  Enjoy his description and photos of the flight on their website, here.

Tomorrow morning, it might be fun to get up around 4:15am, make yourself a cup of something nice and head down to Brighton Beach.

From there, you'll have a pretty good vantage point to watch the annular (or ring) eclipse of the sun by the moon, right at sunrise.

Bob King has all the information in his most recent blog post here, including a lot of important information about how to view the eclipse safely.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but you won't feel the damage to your eyes if you look unaided at the sun - but you will be so, so sorry you did.

Speaking of Bob King, where will HE be?  Flying right into the path of the event, as a matter of fact.  He was invited by Sky & Telescope magazine to be part of their 2021 Annual Eclipse Flight (with the likes of Jim Cantore, no less), and we'll see if he'll let us share some of the photos of his trip!!

Lisa Johnson started her broadcast career anchoring the television news at her high school and spinning country music at KWWK/KOLM Radio in Rochester, Minnesota. She was a reporter and news anchor at KTHI in Fargo, ND (not to mention the host of a children's program called "Lisa's Lane") and a radio reporter and anchor in Moorhead, Bismarck, Wahpeton and Fergus Falls.Since 1991, she has hosted Northland Morning on KUMD. One of the best parts of her job includes "paying it forward" by mentoring upcoming journalists and broadcasters on the student news team that helps produce Northland Morning. She also loves introducing the different people she meets in her job to one another, helping to forge new "community connections" and partnerships.Lisa has amassed a book collection weighing over two tons, and she enjoys reading, photography, volunteering with Animal Allies Humane Society and fantasizing about farmland. She goes to bed at 8pm, long before her daughter, two cats, or three dogs.
