Harm Reduction Sisters is a local organization focused on helping people who are using drugs or experiencing trauma. In partnership with the local school district, students will have easier access to the support of the organization.
"I really have always had a passion of wanting to educate people on harm reduction and bringing it to marginalized communities," says Kameron Peak, Director of Outreach and Engagement with Harm Reduction Sisters. In the past, Peak has worked with health classes at area schools, but this year the connection with students will be more immediate. The organization plans to continue with classroom presence and to increase visibility with regular tabling in common areas particularly at their homebase of Denfeld High School.
For Peak, the education provided by Harm Reduction Sisters is both necessary and timely. "I feel like D.A.R.E. asked a lot of good questions and gave a lot of great answers," says Peak. "But I believe that children and youth are very inquisitive and curious beings... I feel like this is where I come into play in educating people with the tools and the knowledge and the resources."
