The poems found in Marie Zhuikov's latest publication High Fire Danger: Poems of Love & Nature cover 38 years of work. "In college I actually got trained in poetry," says Zhuikov. "It was really helpful to me because I had been reading mainly poems from the classic poets at that point... I hadn't read modern poets until college."
As per the title, Zhuikov's work tends to gravitate toward themes of love and nature. "I went through each poem and tried to label it with one word," says the author. "And they all came up to be love and nature, which isn't surprising." Though all poems are categorized in either of the two sections of the collection, Zhuikov's poetry also dips into culture, travel, and (not infrequently) humor.
High Fire Danger is available at Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth, Art Dock in Canal Park, Foxes and Fireflies in Superior, and online.
