Spring has sprung in the Northland - and onto the pages of One Spring Up North by John Owens, a 2025 publication from the University of Minnesota Press.
The picture book is the third installment of Owens's Up North series, which offers snapshots of the changing season in the Boundary Waters. The book consists of hand-drawn images depicting a group canoeing through the northern wilderness.
The book contains no words, something that Owens says provides the reader with the chance to explore their own imagination.
"I think some of the pros of doing that, where there are no words, just opens up the pretty much endless possibilities of storytelling. Kids can make up a story. Their parents or their grandparents can make up a story. And the story can change each time you look at the book."
Owens will be at Zenith Bookstore from 10-11:30am on April 26, which is National Independent Bookstore Day. You can pick up your copy of One Spring Up North at the event, at other local bookstores, or online.
Minnesota Reads is produced at The North 103.3 with funding provided in part by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
