Since the age of fourteen, Bob King has been fascinated by the Northern Lights. Now, through the comprehensive book Magnificent Aurora: Your Complete Guide to Nature's Greatest Light Show, King is able to share the wonder of the aurora with readers.
"You're going to cry," says King, offering an expectation for people viewing the aurora for the first time. "It is as spectacular... as seeing a total eclipse of the sun." Although photographs throughout the book will offer striking images that will catch the eye of readers, the book also dives deep into the history of understanding, and the science behind the aurora. Additionally, King talks about aurora on other planets, and the communities that have been born because of the aurora here at home.
This work by King could be considered a topical subject. The eleven-year sunspot cycle is nearing its peak and should yield many opportunities to view some astounding displays of aurora. Currently, astronomers are anticipating July of 2025 to be the crest of the sunspot cycle.
