A severed arm clutched by a fearsome looking chicken. That was the plan from the start for artist Annmarie Geniusz when she was chosen to design the cover for the 2024 Homegrown Music Festival field guide. "In my doodle life... there's a lot more horror movie inspired drawings," says Geniusz, who's best known for her chalk work - work that usually takes on a far less gruesome tone.
A Homegrown enthusiast, Geniusz has been making the most of the 2024 festival. She's been out and about every night so far. At the halfway point, spirits are still high. Having caught roughly 5-6 acts each day, Geniusz is not limiting herself to the official events, finding morning shows, busking, secret shows, and more. "It's a beautiful chaos, and at the end of the night you're like, 'what did I end up seeing?'"
With four nights of Homegrown to go, Geniusz advises monitoring how you're feeling. "Hydrate and try to take a sober night," says Geniusz. "Take a disco nap." And if you're feeling sick, stay home. Even before Covid, the "chicken flu" was a common phrase for sickness passed around during Homegrown.
