Finally - a local theater that's a little ... less "professional"

The theater community here in the Twin Ports is an embarrassment of riches.  There are dozens of professional, community, and college theaters, comedy troupes, improv groups, and ephemeral groups that form, disband and re-form.  Some draw from all of these categories.

This is great if you're an avid theater-goer, but what if you're just a person who'd like to be in a show but can't accomodate months of a grueling rehearsal schedule?  What if you played Laura in "The Glass Menagerie" in high school but nowadays, your memory isn't up to all of Amanda Wingfield's lines?

Add a new category of theater to the community: Not Quite So Intense.  The new GROW Theatre (Grassroots Opportunities for Women in Theatre) is committed to providing local women theatre artists opportunities in all aspects of theatre, including "robust and diverse women's roles."

And if that means dusting off a jewel like the Lux Radio Theatre's adaptation of "Little Women" and presenting that next weekend at Zeitgeist as its inaugural production, the strong female characters and the ability to perform with scripts makes it a perfect fit for the new company's mission.

Lux soap sponsored The Lux Radio Hour: "The radio play itself would usually be broken into three acts, with short commercials for Lux between all segments. Once the play was finished, the host would chat to the stars, again nudging them to say wonderful things about Lux, which would be dutifully read from a script by the star."

Lisa Johnson started her broadcast career anchoring the television news at her high school and spinning country music at KWWK/KOLM Radio in Rochester, Minnesota. She was a reporter and news anchor at KTHI in Fargo, ND (not to mention the host of a children's program called "Lisa's Lane") and a radio reporter and anchor in Moorhead, Bismarck, Wahpeton and Fergus Falls.Since 1991, she has hosted Northland Morning on KUMD. One of the best parts of her job includes "paying it forward" by mentoring upcoming journalists and broadcasters on the student news team that helps produce Northland Morning. She also loves introducing the different people she meets in her job to one another, helping to forge new "community connections" and partnerships.Lisa has amassed a book collection weighing over two tons, and she enjoys reading, photography, volunteering with Animal Allies Humane Society and fantasizing about farmland. She goes to bed at 8pm, long before her daughter, two cats, or three dogs.
