In 2009, local artists joined together with the Superior Business Improvement District to form a group called SPAC2ES, which stands for Superior Public Art Creating Community Environments. With a mission of using art to revitalize the city, the artists from SPAC2ES have painted murals and held exhibitions all over downtown Superior. This week, textile artist Erika Mock talks about SPAC2ES and their contributions to the local art scene, which are now reaching out to high school students, as well.

Erika Mock has been creating beautiful textile pieces for over twenty-two years, using every fabric from yarn to silk. Recently, she has been making versatile garments, or wings, out of recycled clothing. These pieces can be worn as scarves, shawls, or wraps. They can even be hung simply to be observed as the beautiful works of art that they are. Working with SPAC2ES, Mock and other local artists formed Phantom Galleries; converting four vacant store fronts into 24/7 art installations. Saturday, April 13th, Phantom Galleries will hold a reception from 1-5pm in celebration of their most recent exhibition. This show will feature the work of various Superior High School students. Mock joins us to talk her wearable additions to this amazing new cooperative of artists.
