Sarah Krueger | Northern Air EP
Thanksgiving has come and gone, meaning holiday music of all types is allowed to take back its musical throne throughout the month of December. Some wait all year for it, while others have learned to grin and bear their way through it. Thankfully, Sarah Krueger provides a meeting point for both types of listeners.
Duluth’s own Sarah Krueger released her five track EP, Northern Air, on December 5th right after the snow swept over the northland in a white fury. Krueger set to work on this EP in November by hiding out for a few days in St. Paul to record some holiday songs with fellow musician and UMD graduate, Jordan Taylor.
The EP is short and sweetened by Krueger’s warm vocals as the folk singer puts her own spin on traditional holiday songs. Thrown in the mix are two original songs by the artist, “Winter Song” and “Northern Air” both of which have their own hints toward the Wisconsin native’s ties to Northern winters. The album artwork is a familiar picture of Park Point in winter, echoing Krueger’s croon of “baby, baby this is home.”
“Northern Air” is an original song strung together with references to other holiday anthems like “Hallelujah” and “Silver Bells” in the last half of the tune. Krueger sings these holiday favorites in such an effortless and fresh way that breathes a new life into these staple carols throughout the EP.
Northern Air reflects the simplicity of the season in the composition of each song with Krueger’s honey voice dripping over acoustic guitar and, of course, some silver bells.
