San Francisco-based Girls' sophomore LP finds the duo giving their song writing and production talents that shined on their lo-fi debut Album the big studio treatment: crisp production quality, session musicians, elaborate instrumental arrangements, Corgan-caliber attention to detail, etc. By Basement DJ: The Doctor
Father, Son, Holy Ghost revels in its indulgences, but vocalist and primary songwriter Christopher Owens' exceedingly earnest vocals keep the songs in check; nothing feels superfluous here. The bright pop songs and surf riffs sound like they are being beamed into your ears straight from San Francisco and blend surprisingly well with the wistful ballads and bluesy, minor-chord-driven tracks. Father, Son, Holy Ghost couldn't be a better follow-up album - give it a spin at the very least for "Love Like a River", one of the finest songs released so far this year.
