KUMD Album Reviews: Murs

Murs is known for not being afraid to speak up and say his mind. Now he is back with a new album, and this time it's with the underrated producer Ski Beatz. On Love & Rockets vol. 1: The Declaration, they add to Murs' reputation for being quick, introspective but still fun. By Basement DJ: Hannah Maertz

Whether he is talking about an ex, LA or old school hip hop, love is definitely a theme in this album. But this isn't some sappy love-ballad type ish, Remember 2 Forget is jazzy with a good beat and witty, bitter lines to match. He continues to spread the love with Easy E, an ode to LA and its hip hop scene, which is sure to be an instant classic. Love is not the only prevailing theme on this album, on Reach Hire, Murs doesn't forget to call out the sell outs and major labels. Ski Beatz also contributes consistently good beats to this album although there isn't one in particular that stands out. He does effectively demonstrate though that just like Murs, he knows what he is doing, and hell, he does it well. The final track on the album gets serious with guitar riffs and piano- Animal Style, a song about homophobia, is chilling.?
Murs has been in the game for almost 20 years and has stood true to his music. The fact that he can present such thought-provoking lyrics alongside songs with much less heavy subject matter- and get away with it-? in Love & Rockets Vol. 1: The Declaration proves again what everyone should already know. Murs is a master of hip hop. Love & Rockets Vol. 1: The Declaration is a definite must for all hip hop enthusiasts and is worth a listen for anyone that appreciates sincere, honest music.?
