Backyard Almanac: Fireflies and Dragonflies

The headline news: we need rain. Beyond that, migration continues, the leaves are fully green, and plenty of flowers are still in bloom.

Also notable are the insects. Keep your eyes open for the dragonflies. They've been emerging from their underwater origins and surfacing to - among other things - eat mosquitos. Fireflies are also starting to light up the night in rural areas. "The first [fireflies] that show up in the season are usually in the trees," says Larry Weber. "Later, as we get through the later months of summer there will be more on the grasses."

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday morning at 8:20 on Northland Morning.
