Music She Wrote

Music She Wrote

Join us for an afternoon that shines a spotlight on the incredible talents of women composers for the pipe organ. Three local organists, Velda Graham Bell, Karen Hanson Sande and Rachael Kresha will present a concert called Music She Wrote at 3:00pm on Sunday, November 16 at Duluth’s First United Methodist Church (aka “The Coppertop”). Admission to the concert is free, with a freewill offering to be taken.

Until recently, compositions by women have been a rarity, particularly when you look at the “classical” repertoire. This concert will explore organ compositions ranging from the pen of Isabella Leonarda, an Italian composer from the 17th century, to Florence Price, the first African American woman to have a composition played by a major symphony orchestra. Other featured composers include Canadian composer Rachel Laurin, British composer Ghislaine Reece-Trapp, and American composers Emma Lou Diemer, Celina Kobetitsch, Brenda Portman, and Gwyneth Walker.

The concert will further celebrate the completion of the recent renovation and expansion of the church’s Austin pipe organ.
