DSSO Masterworks 5: Beethoven & Bizet
The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra welcomes guest conductor Bill Eddins and pianist Evren Ozel to Symphony Hall for an exciting program including Abels, Beethoven, and Bizet.
Michael Abels' More Seasons is a modern interpretation of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, specifically "Spring" and "Summer," with a "maniacal, Minimalist abuse" of the original themes, as Abels himself has stated. It's often described as "Vivaldi in a Mixmaster." The evening also features Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto, called his most "admirable, singular, artistic and complex" concerto. Completing the program, Bizet's Symphony in C was written at age 17 and never played during his lifetime until it was "discovered" in 1933, enchanting audiences ever since with its beautiful melodies, rich orchestration, and elegant charm.
