There are a lot of woods to explore out there. Through the lens of art, Annie Dugan highlights some of the local offerings that tie the enchantment of the woodlands to the beauty of artistic creations.
Jewelry based on a Nordic myth? That's what you'll find at the Nordic Center in downtown Duluth. Jewelry artist and goldsmith Liz Bucheit's collection of Norwegian-inspired filigree jewelry will be on display through April. The work is inspired by the Scandinavian myth of the forest huldra, a beautiful woman with a cow tail who charms humans into living forever inside a magic mountain. The event also includes SunFUNdays on April 14th for families to make their own creations using recycled material. Preregistration is encouraged.
Siiviis Gallery is also focusing on the woods. Works by Dan Wiemer are on display through March. Wiemer focuses on Northern landscapes, particularly where woods meet the water. "What's really interesting about his water media work is it's very precise and controlled," says Dugan. "There's a real tension that he provides between control and freedom."
