Astro Bob's Backyard Astronomy: Star Maps and Spotting Mercury

Keep an eye on the morning horizon for a new look at Mercury - it'll be out for the next two weeks or so. "If you look at the planet Venus right around seven o'clock in the morning," says Bob King, "measure down about one outstretched fist to the lower left of Venus, you'll see the planet Mercury."

The Winter Hexagon is also making an appearance as well. Six bright stars from different constellations form a rough hexagon in the sky. And if you're having trouble identifying this or any constellation, Bob has a suggestion. "Stellarium Mobile - it is free," says King. "You just have to hold it up to the sky. As you move your phone across the sky it will show you the current constellations."

You can hear Astro Bob's Backyard Astronomy every other Tuesday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
