"I had always been concerned about the environment," says Cynthia Kaufman, the Director of Vaconcellos Institute for Democracy in Action at De Anza College. "I think some of what kept me from getting involved earlier was a sense that I couldn't even imagine a way forward."

After reading Heat by George Monbiot, Kaufman found inspiration to imagine a better future. Now a teacher, organizer and Activist, Kaufman strives to make sure the message around the climate crisis is clear, which she sums up in three points: it's happening now, it's an equity issue, and there is a villain. "All of the technology needed for everyone on this planet to live well... is already with us. What's getting in the way of us making the transition is the political power of the fossil fuel industry."

Though there are systemic changes needed to make a large difference, individual choices such as eating less meat, flying less, and reducing excess are just a few of the mindful choices that Kaufman encourages. "There's lots of work people can do."
