For almost 40 years, visual artist Ta-coumba T. Aiken has called St. Paul home. "I like St. Paul. It's down to earth people… the art scene in the Twin Cities is huge," says Aiken.
Now, the artist is heading north to Duluth for the reception of his exhibition The Way I See now at the Duluth Art Institute. The reception takes place from 5-7pm on Thursday, February 29th on the 4th floor of the DAI Galleries. Many of Aiken's large-scale works will be on display. Aiken will be joined by Arleta Little for the release of Black Swallowtail, a book of poetry by Little with images by Aiken. "We’ve known each other for many, many years… it’s like we’re doing a duet."
Aiken also spoke about his efforts (and the efforts of many other community volunteers) to create the world's largest Lite Brite art. Ten years after its construction, the work - consisting of nearly 600,000 individual Lite Brite pegs - is still on display at the Union Depot in St. Paul.
