While some people are focusing on "back to school" Annie Dugan is focusing on the various folk schools in our region.
The Duluth Folk School in the craft district is "dedicated to creating community through the joyful experiences of handcrafting art." Upcoming classes include spoon carving, rosemaling (taught by Tara Austin) and navigational charting.
The North House Folk School in Grand Marais not only offers courses but is now accepting applications for their 12-month-long Craft Education Internship through September 22nd.
The Ely Folk School might be one of the few folk schools with a specific focus on root beer. "This is sort of a nod to Dorothy Molter, aka the Root Beer Lady," says Dugan. "You get to learn her history as well as learning a recipe on how to make your own."
And if you're looking for a bit of a southern trip, Marine Mills Folk School in Marine on St. Croix and Vesterheim Folk Art School in Decorah, Iowa have a lot to offer.
