The Red Spider Nebula, the Witch Head Nebula, Ghost Nebulas... there are frightening sights out there in deep space.

If you're looking for something not so scary this Halloween, there is a gathering at the Marshall Alworth Planetarium at UMD beginning at 5pm tonight. "There will be trick or treats," says Bob King. "And if it's clear, I suspect there will be a few telescopes out there too."

After Halloween, look to the skies for a view of Jupiter in the east. The large planet is in opposition to the sun and is fairly close to earth; only 33 light minutes away. Also coming up in November are the Taurid meteor shower and the Leonid meteor shower.

You can hear Astro Bob's Backyard Astronomy every other Tuesday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
