Jessica Savage

This story was rebroadcast on Northland Morning August 17, 2022. The story originally aired on June 29, 2022.

Biologist Jessica Savage is keeping an eye on the trees.

For the past three years, Savage and a team of volunteer scientists have been tagging and tracking trees in the Duluth area to determine, not only the impact of climate change, but also the impact that Lake Superior might have on potential phenological changes.

Three locations of varying distance from the lake were chosen; the Lakewalk, Bagley Nature Center, and Boulder Lake. Data of interest to the team includes the timing of a tree's flowers, fruits, and leaf color change.

The program is driven largely by public involvement and interest. To learn more, visit the Superior Phenology website.
