Questions about the future of forest fires in Minnesota are complicated. Just ask Travis Verdegan, the Predictive Service Coordinator for the Minnesota DNR.
The summer of 2021 proved to be a bad forest fire year. Much of this had to do with drought and a low snow pack that quickly dried, thus priming July and August for fires. Predicted risk of forest fires this year is low due in part to flooding. But will bad forest fires be a more frequent occurrence? And will fires become more significant?
Although there is less fire risk this summer than last, there are always precautions to take. Visit the Minnesota DNR website for current fire conditions and restrictions.
