As things finally get warm enough to break ground and put seeds and young plants in the ground, several tasks should be accomplished to ensure your garden has the best chance to stay healthy and safe.

Tom Kasper reminds us that step one is healthy soil. Make sure it has a healthy mix of organic matter. Next ensure that your location has good drainage, and adequate sunlight. Have you taken steps to protect it from hungry critters (deer, rabbits, et al.)?

Even though the days are warming, some of our plants may not be ready for the outdoor garden just yet. Tomato and pepper plants, for example, do best when the overnight temps stay above 50°F, so you may want to keep those in their indoor planters for now.
