This year's heat and drought will be character-building for new gardeners

There's a reason Northland Gardeners refer to themselves as "hardy." And this year, with the relentless heat and persistent drought, has been more challenging than most.

But what about new gardeners who are just getting their feet wet — that is, their feet dusty in gardening?

At least there's a helpful community to keep their spirits up.
